That has recently changed with the topic of climate change becoming a huge concern and fashion designers changing their ways to become more kind to mother earth. When deciding on which brands to buy from make sure they are transparent about their brand. You can usually find this information out on their website, but a quick email to the brand is also a great way to see if they practice sustainability or not. Can Your Food and Drink Turn Into What You Wear ?!

This blog I will introduce you to sustainable materials that you may have not to think of that could turn into clothes! These materials are sustainable, eco-friendly, and unique.

Coffee Ground !

Who would think that coffee ground can turn into a wearable clothing item? This idea came up in 2005, from a Taiwanese couple, Jason Chen and his wife Amy when they were at Starbucks and having their coffee. Amy noticed a group of old ladies collecting leftover coffee grounds. She then told Jason that this is a great idea to turn coffee into the fabric because coffee can take away the body odor. shortly after her suggestion, Jason launched a first brand that converts leftover coffee grounds into a fabric called S.Cafe. He mixed the coffee grounds with the polyester, which made from recycled plastic bottles to make the coffee yarn. One T-shirt can be made with three cups of coffee grounds and five recycled plastic bottles! Here are some brands that carry clothes that made from coffee: S.Cafe, Patagonia, North Face, Timberland, Adidas, American Eagle, and Victoria’s Secret.

Milk Cotton !

Food and dairy are being wasted every day and has become a huge issue. Why don’t we turn the waste into something that wearable? That’s why we are turning milk that can’t be consumed by humans into the fabric. It is made with casein power found in milk and called QMilch from a woman name Anke Domaske in German. This fabric feels like silk, which is very soft to touch and comfortable to wear. However, the production of milk fiber is very minimal. Due to the minimal of milk fiber production, there are not a lot of brands that carry products made from this fiber. I hope one day this fiber would be popular and people start using it for more clothing items. Here is a brand I found that L.A. based brand called Mi Terro

Pineapple Fiber !

Last but not least, we have Pineapple Fiber! This fiber is made from pineapple leaves and commonly used in the Philippines. As we know that leather is very bad and animal cruelty. However, Dr. Carmen Hijosa, who has been researched and came up with the idea of using pineapple’s leaves and turns it into the fiber. She uses this fiber and turns it into leather goods. Not only she developed such a sustainable fiber but also create jobs and income for many people in the Philippine. She has a brand called Pinatex and an online shop called Ananas-Anam, which sells leather goods made from pineapple leaves. This fiber is such a huge thing in the fashion industry, now we can replace real leather with organic leather.

Next week we will introduce you to sustainable fashion staples such as things you can wear with multiple outfits. Stay tuned!

1. It’s always best to start with a clean slate and wash your face to get off the sweat and oil that accumulates from sleeping. I love to use cold cold water in the morning to wash my face with. Not only does it wake me up, but it’s good to get the blood circulating and makes my face less puffy. I wash my face with Tatcha Deep Cleanse (great for oily skin) and my favorite clean brand.

2. I will switch up between face masks for different face concerns I have at the time but lately I have been using fresh masks from Lush. They have a wide variety of masks for all different skin types and concerns. They are fresh so you must keep them in a fridge. What’s great about them is you can save the pods they come in to 7 and bring into store for a free mask!

3. use an essence, its like a toner but better and allows your next products to absorb better , the essence I use if by Fresh called Kombucha Antioxidant Essence.

4. After I let the essence soak into my skin and my face feels dry, I will take Drunk elephant C-firma Vitamin C Day Serum out of my fridge and apply it to my face and the back of my hands. This is good for brightening skin and getting rid of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Also I have heard Vitamins C serum is a natural sunblock, but I don’t know if that actually scientifically proven so please wear a sunscreen!

5. After I use my serum and massage that into my skin I will take my favorite lightweight moisturizer, Tatcha water cream and apply that to my skin. This is great for oily skin types like me and has a great light scent and does not leave me feeling greasy.

6.And last but not least I use a CC cream with a physical sunscreen in it because in order to stay young and prevent aging you must use a sunscreen! I like the cc cream by Supergoop because its lightweight has 30 SPF and matches my skin beautifully and still looks natural

Why Sustainability matters?

Recently, we hear the word “sustainability” in many places as more and more people are becoming aware of our planet……In fact, a lot of fashion companies and brands as well as beauty products are starting a sustainable line. Today, we will be looking at the definition of sustainability and why it is so important.

http://www.picturequotes.com/sustainability-is-here-to-stay-or-we-may-not-be-quote-208053, ・ https://www.tun.com/blog/sustainable-fashion-feels-good-and-looks-even-better/ ・ https://fashionweekdaily.com/circular-fashion-guide-vestiaire-collective/ ・ https://www.forbes.com/sites/josephholt/2020/01/28/sustainability-in-business-is-more-an-opportunity-than-a-threat/

Sustainability is the ability to stay consistent in terms of these three principles; economic, environment, and social. In the Fashion/Beauty industry, we are producing and consuming more textiles and products than ever before, but its waste is a large issue in today’s society. The amount of synthetic and raw materials used in the process of making clothes is clearly harming the environment. In addition, there are many unethical processes such as animal testing in the production of cosmetics. It is important that we start taking an action right now to save our home, Earth.

Because after all, Earth is our Common Home

Next week, we will be introducing some of the go-to natural and eco friendly beauty + makeup products…..stay tuned!
